BUILDING A SCHOOL AND KEEPING IT GOING: CAMBODIA

Sambour, Cambodia, near the Angor Wat temples, is a forgotten community that is sidelined from all social, educational, economic and public health infrastructure. In 2007, when Sunday Afternoons owners visited the region, Families were living in extreme poverty, with little or nothing to eat, no schools for children, andlimited ways for families to climb out of their poor economic situations. Without an education, many children fall to prostitution to support their families.

After that visit in 2007 the owners of Sunday Afternoons were led to partner with Cambodia We Care: an organization committed to helping the area, with food, small business job opportunities, and education. CWC continually provides education, assistance and relief to the families and children in the area.

Through Cambodia We Care, Sunday Afternoons and other donors have successfully helped rebuild and reopen the Sambour Elementary School in 2008-09. In 2009-10 they were able to hire a headmaster, teachers, and cooks; as well aspurchase school supplies ,uniforms and shoes for 170 students. Sunday Afternoons currently commits to paying the salaries of the headmaster, 3 teachers, and 3 cooks, in efforts to keep the school operating and students fed. The CWC is makingpositive efforts in establishing a vegetable garden to feed their students, running a health and eye clinic, and assisting this community out of poverty, through education, and community support. We invite you, to join us in this important work. Please go to their website at www.cambodiawecare.org.

We are working on getting uniforms for the new children.

Not only does the school provide education, but hope for a community whose biggest asset is their children.

Nutrition and a food program is essential for the kids at school, this is their main meal of the day.

Sunday Afternoons helps support each of these groups and others with fundraisers and intermittent cash donations. Visit each groups website at www.kswild.org, www.siskiyou.org, and www.onda.org.

Protecting our environment has always been a passion of ours.

THE FAMILY NURTURING CENTER

The Family Nurturing Center is a non-profit program, born from community need and created by a community that cares about its children and families. They are a child neglect and abuse prevention and intervention program designed for high-risk families with children from birth to age five. The FNC was created in 2006 in response to the growing number of child abuse victims. From a small beginning in one room where four children were served, they have grown to a staff of 21 professionals who have served over 400 children and their families. Sunday Afternoons helps sponsor this important non-profit by outfitting the staff and children with Sunday Afternoons sun protective hats as well making intermittent product or cash donations used in fund raising events. To learn more about the Family Nurturing Center, make a donation, or get involved visit www.familynurturingcenter.org.
